This protein icing takes three ingredients and about two minutes: vanilla protein powder, a little softened cream cheese, and a splash of cream. It’s softer than a frosting, closer to a glaze-like icing, and it’s great spread on cake, cookies, or a stack of pancakes.
Each serving (half the batch) has about 131 calories, 3g total carbs, and 6g protein.
What You’ll Need
- 1 scoop Rock the Shot vanilla protein powder

Notes
Not All Protein Powders Act the Same
I made this with Rock the Shot vanilla protein powder, and the amounts above are written for it. You can use a different vanilla protein powder, but protein powders don’t all behave the same way. Some soak up a lot more liquid, some turn gritty or gummy, and some are much sweeter than others.
If you swap in another powder, start with the same amount of cream and add more a little at a time until the icing is smooth and spreadable. Taste as you go, too, since sweetness varies a lot from brand to brand.

Ways to Use It
- Cake: spread it over a slice of chocolate cake or a mug cake.
- Cookies: spread or drizzle it over soft cookies.
- Pancakes: use it in place of syrup on my protein pancakes, which use the same powder.
Storage
This recipe makes a small batch, so it’s easiest to make it fresh. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for a day or two. Stir in a little cream if it thickens.
Protein Icing FAQ
Can I use any protein powder?
You can, but the amounts in this recipe are written for Rock the Shot vanilla protein powder. Protein powders absorb liquid differently and vary a lot in sweetness and texture. Start with the same amount of cream and add more a teaspoon at a time until it’s smooth and spreadable, and taste as you go.
Is protein icing low-carb?
Made as written, each serving (half the batch) has about 3g total carbs. Other protein powders can have more or less, so check the label on yours.
How do I make it thinner or thicker?
For a thinner, more pourable icing, whisk in more cream a teaspoon at a time. For a thicker icing, add a little more softened cream cheese.
Can I make protein icing ahead of time?
It’s best made fresh, and it only takes a couple of minutes. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for a day or two. If it thickens, stir in a splash of cream.
What can I put protein icing on?
Cake, cookies, and pancakes are my favorites. It’s especially good on my protein pancakes, linked below.
