This dip is a healthier version of a party favorite. And the best part is that it tastes amazing! It’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
- Serves: party goers
- Prep time: 5 mins
- Cook time: 45 mins
Ingredients
- 1 yellow onion
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- About 1/2 cup of broth/stock Note: chicken, beef, or vegetable stock or bone broth work here
- 1 cup of sour cream
- 1 cup of plain, full fat Greek yogurt
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Chop the onion into 1-inch bite-size pieces.
- Melt 2 tbsp butter in a sturdy bottomed pot over medium heat and add sliced onion.
- Cook the onion in the melted butter, stirring occasionally to encourage the Maillard reaction to brown the onion without burning.
- Deglaze the pot with broth in small increments. Here, you want to add enough broth/stock to release the caramelized bits from the bottom of the pan, but not so much that the onions become soupy. This process will take about 45 minutes.
- Remove the onions from the stove once carmelized and let cool.
- Add remaining ingredients to the fully cooled carmelized onion, stir to combine, and serve immediately or refrigerate before serving.
Optional Add-Ins & Variations
- You can substitute a dry white wine for the recommended broth to use for deglazing.
